Bill Belichick landed his first five-star recruit at North Carolina with the commitment of quarterback Gary Merrill. However, his five-star rating actually applies to college lacrosse, not college football.
The New York-native will play two sports for the Tar Heels!
Merrill is one of the best midfielders in the country. He is extremely physical with his 1-on-1 defense and served as a primary party starter for Saint Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, New York. His stepdown is powerful and his righty rocket makes him a serious threat as a goal-scorer.
Listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Merrill was ranked as one of the five best college lacrosse recruits in the Class of 2025. It’s not hard to see why!
In addition to being a top-ranked middie, Gary Merrill also played quarterback for the Friars. He threw for 1,762 yards and 19 touchdowns and ran for 1,955 yards and 32 touchdowns in 13 games as a senior. That’s 3,546 total yards with 50 total touchdowns.
Saint Anthony’s went 9-4 en route to the the New York Catholic High School Football League Class AAA Tournament championship game. Its quarterback was named as the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year.
Gary Merril will be a two-sport athlete!
Merrill had previously committed to play lacrosse at the University of North Carolina. Bill Belichick, a huge lax supporter and fan, loves guys who play both sports — ie: Chris Hogan. He offered the coveted lacrosse recruit an opportunity to also play football for the Tar Heels.
(@garygoat16)Although Merrill is likely going to factor into the rotation for Joe Breschi, if not start, he probably won’t see the field for Belichick. The five-star lacrosse recruit is going to be a depth piece for the football team behind Max Johnson (maybe?), Bryce Baker, Ryan Browne and Au’Tori Newkirk.
Gary Merrill will not be the only North Carolina lacrosse player on the football team. His soon-to-be teammate Ryan Hornyak currently pulls double duty for the Tar Heels as a kicker!
