Utah State basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun was upset with an official during a loss to New Mexico on Saturday. After the game, he called for that referee’s suspension.
Calhoun was seen questioning a possible kicked ball that went uncalled prior to a Lobos basket. He called a timeout before the Aggies inbound attempt and gave the official a piece of his mind.
The ref, Tommy Nunez, refused to back down, getting in the face of the head coach before bumping into him in the interaction. Had roles been reversed, Calhoun would’ve almost certainly been punished for the contact with an official. Nunez had to be pried away from the situation to prevent it from escalating further.
Shoutout to the person that gave me the video. This is absolutely insane pic.twitter.com/9ADT436tBQ

After the game, Jerrod Calhoun was asked his thoughts on that exchange. He called for Nunez to be removed from his next scheduled game.
“I’ve been doing this for 13 years,” he responded. “I’ve coached a lot of games, been a part of a Final Four, Sweet 16s, national runner-ups, Division II, conference championships. I probably have less than seven technical fouls – maybe five or six technicals – I don’t know what the math is on it.
“I thought it was a kicked ball. I can’t wait to go back and see it. I’ve never seen an official do that. We’ll see what the league does to it. They definitely should take a hard look at that play.”
Jerrod Calhoun credits New Mexico for coming in and taking control in the 2nd half. Makes no excuses.
But also called for the suspension of Tommy Nunez for making contact with him in a heated conversation.
I’ve never seen anything like it.

Utah State would blow a six-point halftime lead in the matchup, being outscored by 25 points in the final 20 minutes of play. New Mexico left with a convincing 82-63 win to improve to 18-4 on the season.
The Aggies, meanwhile, fell to 19-3 and one game behind the Lobos in the Mountain West Conference standings.
