The Indiana basketball head coaching job is up for grabs with Mike Woodson announcing his plans to leave at season’s end. Replacement candidates are now beginning to come to the forefront, with one being Clemson’s Brad Brownell.
Brownell led the Tigers to the Elite Eight in 2024 and has another roster poised for a deep NCAA Tournament run this March. The coach was asked about that speculation on Wednesday.
His response was more coach speak than a denial of having interest in heading to Bloomington. Rather than shut the noise down completely ahead of the postseason, he sidestepped the question.
“I’m not going to talk about potential jobs, I have a great job. I’m 100% focused on this team… That’s what’s going to happen if you’re doing the right things. I’ve never been a self-promoter, and that’s partly because of how much I really like Clemson.”
-Brad Brownell
Never in that response did he emphatically deny interest in another job. Only that he’s not interested in speaking on speculation.
Brad Brownell has ties to the state of Indiana. He was born in Evansville, about two hours outside of Bloomington. He attended DePauw University in Greencastle and previously coached as an assistant at Evansville and the University of Indianapolis.
Accepting the Hoosiers job would represent a return home, making the move all the more attractive. It would also mean leaving his post of 15 years.
Brownell is Clemson’s all-time leader in wins. He’s posted seven 20-win seasons and been to four (soon to be five) NCAA Tournaments.
Last year was his most successful season to date, though many believe he can make a return to the Round of Eight in this year’s Big Dance.
As for Indiana, they’re looking for someone to revive the program. The Hoosiers have been to two NCAA Tournaments in nine years and are looking for their fourth coach in a decade.
Mike Woodson announced his retirement midseason after being booed game after game by the Indiana fanbase. He went 82-52 across four years on the sidelines.
Now, the search to find his replacement has started. Brad Brownell appears to be a top candidate. His response to the speculation certainly didn’t rule out his interest.
