Dabo Swinney believes in the value of a complete college education and the degree that comes with it. He does not think someone like Deion Sanders would be qualified to do his job without a diploma.
That may or may not be true.
Swinney, 55, is one of the last college football coaches to adjust to the modern era of the sport. It took him a very long time to come around on the idea of Name, Image and Likeness. He did not take a single player through the transfer portal until this past offseason.
To be fair, a large number of Swinney’s complaints are valid. Lane Kiffin agrees with a large number of his biggest complaints about the lack of regulation and the current system.
I also have to give Dabo Swinney credit where credit is due for being extremely consistent. Clemson’s head coach has said since the beginning that he is not against players getting paid, he is against anything that devalues education. There is a glaring lack of self-awareness for a guy who gets paid $10 million per year to also complain that athletes are making life-changing money, but his stance remains the same today as it did back in 2021. Fair enough.
These most recent comments during an appearance on Unafraid Show with George Wrighster stay true to Swinney’s initial stance on NIL and education. At their core, what he said is coming from a good place with the best of intentions for his athletes and their futures.
Statistics and the odds and the data says that you have a better opportunity and that you will make more money in the course of your life if you do have an education.

This is true! However, a guy that often says too much once again said too much.
The 55-year-old dragged Deion Sanders’ name into the conversation as an example of why people need to be college educated. It was completely unnecessary.
I love Deion Sanders. He’s one of my heroes growing up!
What a shame if he couldn’t go do that job… he couldn’t be the head coach if he didn’t have his degree. And he’s not coaching for money, he’s coaching because he loves to teach. He knows and he sees where he can impact people’s lives. Especially for the King.
He sees that. He knows that. He is called to that.
And man, what a shame if he did not have that degree. It wouldn’t matter how many Hall of Fames he’s in… he wouldn’t be qualified to really do that.

As far as I can tell, the NCAA does not require its college football coaches to hold a college degree. Most colleges and universities would obviously prefer for their highest-paid employees to be college educated but there is no stated rule either way. So… Deion Sanders technically could still be the head coach at Colorado or Jackson State even if he had not received a degree from Talladega College in 2020.
Even still, Dabo Swinney is right that people who hold a college degree typically make more money and find more success in the professional world than those who don’t. That is a much larger conversation about society, religion and schooling that we won’t have here. It dates back to 1636.
Swinney just wants his guys to be educated to the fullest extend. He wants them to graduate from Clemson. He wants them to succeed. Is that so bad? Of course not.
But to use Coach Prime as the example and bring him up out of absolutely nowhere is a strange thing to do. True or not, there was a way to make his point without name-dropping the most famous personality in college football. Swinney, yet again, allowed himself to go just one step too far. He never knows when to stop!
