The University of British Columbia won the Division-I national championship in ultimate frisbee with a walk-off goal on the final possession of the game. It was an incredible victory capped by one of the best catches of the entire year.
Unfortunately, however, it is a Canadian college that will be crowned as the United States national champions instead of an American program. We must get it together as a country!
British Columbia played its way to the ultimate frisbee title game as the No. 1 seed in the women’s championship bracket. The Thunderbirds took down Oregon in the quarterfinal and Vermont in the semifinal to set up a 1-2 matchup with Carleton College.
Carleton, located in Minnesota, is a perennial title contender in the sport. Its men’s team won this year’s championship. Its women’s team came one goal short.
The University of British Columbia won the D-1 Ultimate Frisbee national championship in the United States.
Games are played with a ‘First to 14’ format. The first team to score 14 goals, also known as touchdowns, wins. Monday’s final match was tied at 13. British Columbia had possession of the disk with a chance to win. If the Thunderbirds did not score, they would give possession back to the Knights.
Carleton never got the opportunity. British Columbia drove the length of the field on its final drive to walk it off. Here is how it went down on the television broadcast:

The national championship-winning drive was highlighted by an unbelievable diving catch. Mika Kurahashi came flying in out of absolutely nowhere to save the season. She also got the hockey assist on the game-winner as soon as she got back to her feet.
I absolutely hate to see a Canadian school win the United States of America Ultimate National Championship but I cannot hate on the incredible finish. The Thunderbirds won fair and square in epic fashion. They deserve to hoist the trophy.
