IndyCar driver Scott McLaughin did not win the Indy 500 on Sunday afternoon. He actually managed to lose the most historic race in the United States before it even began.
The 31-year-old crashed out on the pace lap.
McLaughlin was already forced to race his backup car throughout qualifying because of a crash that sent him airborne during practice last week. Perhaps it was a bad omen for what was to come.
When asked about his backup car, McLaughlin remained confident that it was just as fast as his primary vehicle. There were no concerns or worries about its ability to compete at the Indianapolis 500. He and his team had multiple sessions to get it dialed in and ready to go. They were excited about his ability to contend for the checkered flag from the No. 10 position on Sunday.
That excitement did not last long. It was over before it began, literally.
Scott McLaughlin swerved back and forth on a cold track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to warm his tires during the warm-up laps. The tires were cold. The track was cold and a little bit wet from residual rainstorms. He just wanted to put some temperature in the rubber.
Indy cars are built to turn left and only turn left so they are not great at turning while straight. When a driver lets up the rear tires to get some heat into them, it is very easy for the car to slide out of control.
That is exactly what happened with McLaughlin. He slid right into the barrier and wrecked.
Here is how it looked on the television broadcast:
Scott McLaughlin was distraught and understandably so. He actually went so far as to call it the “worst moment of his life.”
I really have no idea what happened. Just really upset for my team, they built me a fantastic car again […] I know it’s probably dramatic, everyone’s — whatever, but I put so much into this race, everyone does, and just didn’t even get to see the green flag.”
— Scott McLaughlin
The No. 3 car was out of the Indy 500 even before the green flag. The race had yet to officially begin and McLaughlin’s day was already over.
