Disgraced former Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer is still clinging to hopes of a Major League Baseball comeback. But the 34-year-old’s numbers in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League indicate that retirement is probably a more likely outcome than an MLB return.
Bauer, who recently claimed that there are only about 20 hitters on the planet who could hit against him, is currently pitching for the NPB’s Yokohama DeNa BayStars. It’s his second stint with the club after pitching for them in 2023 when he was named to the league’s All-Star Game. This stint, however, isn’t going quite as well.

Through eight starts for the BayStars, Bauer currently has a 3.93 ERA according to FanGraphs. Now, while you may think to yourself, “3.93 isn’t great, but it’s not that bad,” here is where we apply context. The NPB is currently in a significant deadball era. Bauer’s 3.93 ERA ranks sixth-worst in the entire NPB and is the worst of any pitcher in the Central League.
Bauer is averaging just 8.1 strikeouts per nine, compared to 8.5 hits per nine. For comparison’s sake, NPB leader Tatsuya Imai of the Saitama Seibu Lions is 4-1 with a 0.59 ERA and averages 9.4 strikeouts per nine compared to just 4.0 hits per nine.
Mind you, this is the same guy who said the following in post on X in January:
“I’m the second most popular player and the most knowledgeable pitcher on the planet. I’m also a top 10 pitcher on the planet and willing to play for $0. That’s minimum $50M value per year that you’d get for $0. But, someone very obviously lied about me one time so, I can’t go back to work. The absurdity of this situation is off the charts.”
Hey, things change fast. Maybe he was a top-10 pitcher on the planet in January (he wasn’t). But he certainly isn’t now. Nowhere close. Instead, he’s fighting for his job in a league that makes life incredibly hard on hitters.
