WNBA referee Roy Gulbeyan is facing backlash after calling security on Dallas Wings star DiJonai Carrington following Dallas’ 97-97 victory over the Chicago Sky on Thursday. Video of the incident, which Carrington shared on her X account, shows her exchanging words with the referee after the game ended.
When the Carrington continues to approach Gulbeyan, he then motions for a nearby security guard to step between himself and the 27-year-old guard.

“Security… , when i’m literally having a civil conversation is insane . mind you , he called the “sEcUrItY” over there… #Mircoagression,” Carrington posted on X.
Several fans quickly rallied to Carrington’s defense, with one calling the referee’s behavior “unacceptable” and others even calling for his job.
But others suggested that Gulbeyan was in the right and that Carrington should not have approached him in the manner in which she did.
Carrington, who was voted first-team all-defense as well as the WNBA’s Most Improved Player a year ago, is a polarizing figure. She made headlines in the playoffs last season after incidentally poking Caitlin Clark in the eye and later mocking both Clark and her fans over the incident.
“I don’t even know why I would intend to hit anybody in the eye,” Carrington said of the incident. “That doesn’t even make sense to me. But no, I didn’t. I didn’t know I hit her, actually. I was trying to make a play on the ball and I guess I followed through and I hit her.”

Carrington then found herself in the middle of a controversy involving an Uber driver who asked her to leave the vehicle over a disagreement. Carrington then refused to pay for the ride and told the driver that he should call the police.
Of course, none of these incidents are particularly related. But it is curious that she, above anybody else, continually winds up in these situations. At some point it might be time for a little introspection.
