Boston Red Sox rookie starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins absolutely hates the New York Yankees. But the reason why appears to be down to a complete figment of his imagination.
A week ago, Dobbins told the Boston Herald prior to his first start against New York, “that if the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire.” Of course, the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is one of the best in sports. But the two have not played many meaningful games of late, and Dobbins didn’t grow up a Red Sox fan, so many wondered where his distaste for the Yankees came from.
According to Dobbins, his father, Lance, had been drafted twice by the Yankees before being traded to the Diamondbacks, which soured him on the organization.
But a new report from the New York Post shows that there’s no record of Lance Dobbins having ever been drafted by New York. Lance Dobbins’ Baseball Reference page shows two seasons of Independent League ball, while the Red Sox 2025 media guide claims that he played in the Diamondbacks’ system.

Now it appears Dobbins is changing his tune.
“My feelings and all that, they’re based off of my personal experiences and nothing to do with growing up or family,” he said. “And also it’s a rivalry, so we’re just having some fun. Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] got into it too, and we had a good time about it.
“The whole backstory, stuff that I had heard growing up, and seen pictures from my dad — at the end of the day, it’s just from my dad, and what kind of grew my love for the game. But at the end of the day, I don’t go and fact check my dad or anything like that.”
Look, it’s nothing new for pro athletes to tell themselves whatever is necessary to get them fired up or locked in. But this is probably the weirdest example of that I’ve ever seen. Maybe Lance Dobbins really did tell his son the Yankees drafted and spurned him. Maybe Hunter Dobbins really did believe that. But you’d think he’d ask a question or two about the experience or want to read about it on the internet.
Apparently that wasn’t the case.
