When EA Sports revived its beloved college football video game series in 2024, longtime fans of the game were over the moon. But the return of the game also brought about an additional question: what about the college basketball series?
From 1998 to 2009, EA Sports produced an “NCAA March Madness” video game that, while not as popular as their flagship football game, was still widely beloved. Now that series is coming back.

Matt Brown of Extra Points first broke the news of the new game in his newsletter on Monday morning. EA Sports later confirmed the news on its social media channels.
Brown went on to confirm more details about the game, specifically about its proposed release date.
“In a memo sent to college conference offices from the College Licensing Company (CLC), dated July 26, 2025, CLC put out a request for proposal (RFP) to create a college basketball video game in November 2024. According to the memo, five companies expressed formal interest, and three filed formal bids.
The CLC memo recommends that the conferences accept the proposal made by EA Sports to bring back EA Sports College Basketball. This proposal states a plan for EA Sports to release the first game in 2028.”
It’s no surprise that the proposed new game is years away from reality. EA Sports College Football 25 took more than two years in development before being released. Theoretically, that game was far easier for the studio to produce. Not only did EA Sports already produce a football game with its Madden series, but it also needed to deal with licensing for far fewer schools.
EA Sports obtained licensing for all 134 FBS teams and their associated properties for the 2025 game. But there are 352 Division I college basketball teams. Ultimately, the football game has more athletes involved due to roster sizes. But it’s still a massive undertaking for EA Sports to create the new basketball game.
Either way, fans are ecstatic about the new announcement and we can’t wait to see how the game turns out.
