Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark have become fast friends. However, the internet got super weird over a viral video and tried to insinuate that the two teammates are more than just friends.
That is very much not the case, but Cunningham completely misunderstood what people were trying to say and accidentally added fuel to the fire with a post on Instagram.
The seven-year WNBA veteran is in her first year with the Indiana Fever. She was traded from the Phoenix Mercury during the offseason and immediately vowed to be something of an enforcer for Clark. Cunningham has her back. They, and Lexie Hull, are already great friends both on and off the court.
Before we go any further here, let’s make two things clear. Clark is straight. Cunningham is straight.
Caitlin Clark started dating Connor McCaffrey while in college at Iowa. They recently celebrated their two-year anniversary. They are very much still together.
Sophie Cunningham is currently single. However, the 28-year-old bombshell often alludes to her sexual orientation on TikTok.
She likes men.
That leads us to this latest about the two Indiana Fever guards. It stems from a video that went viral over the weekend. Clark, who is currently injured and will not dress for at least two weeks, was sitting on the bench while Cunningham was on the floor. She apparently looked at her teammate in a way that made people think she was ogling her in a non-platonic manner. They questioned if the reigning Rookie of the Year might actually play for the other team— if you catch my drift.

The entire discussion was completely bizarre, entirely unnecessary and kind of gross. Caitlin Clark has a boyfriend of more than 26 months. Sophie Cunningham is in search of a boyfriend. To even consider a world where Clark was thirsting for Cunningham is just dumb. The internet has rotted too many brains.
And yet, Cunningham accidentally poured gasoline on the Clark conversation with the following post:
Some folks thought Cunningham was telling Clark to back off from her advances. Others thought she was mad at her for blowing their cover. All of those people are dead wrong.
This actually happened once before. Clark was starstruck by Nelly Korda but some people interpreted her behavior in the completely wrong way. They thought she was ogling the greatest female golfer in the world, but really, she just seems to have a habit for falling for these kinds of moments.

I would imagine that Cunningham saw a funny video going viral and decided to take a friendly jab at her friend. I don’t think she would’ve posted it if she knew what people were saying. Or maybe this was Sophie Cunningham’s way of deescalating the ridiculous discourse about Caitlin Clark.
Either way, I cannot believe it got to this point in the first place. One out-of-context video created an entire conspiracy about the biggest star in the WNBA and her sexual orientation. Super weird behavior.
