Tennessee High School Lacrosse Fight Leads To Pathetic Punishment And Fines For Minor Scuffle

Tennessee High School Lacrosse Fight Nolensville Franklin Probation

Franklin and Nolensville will be on probation during the 2026 high school lacrosse season after a small dust-up caused an early stoppage at the Division-I Class AA state championship game in Tennessee. Both programs will also pay a fine of $500.

Even though the rules are the rules, it is a pathetic decision.

This was the first season for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to hold lacrosse championships as the sport continues to grow in the southeast. Nolensville and Franklin, which are separated by less than 15 miles, met in the inaugural Class AA final at Ravenwood High School on May 17.

The Knights defeated the Admirals by a final score of 10-4. However, the game was cut short. A shoving match broke out on the sideline with 1:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Officials decided not to continue the contest because of the amount of ejections that were expected to come from the incident. They did not want to play on.

A play along the sideline spilled out of bounds and into the Nolensville bench. Shoving ensued, which caused Franklin’s team to rush over to the opposite sideline. Players were separated by their coaches and the officials. Nobody was hurt. It really was not that serious.

TSSAA Executive Director Mark Reeves declined to comment on the circumstances of the early ending. Nolensville head coach Tom Pettit was not happy with the decision.

I would’ve liked to have seen us try to make up for it and get back out but the refs didn’t want to do that, so it was unfortunate. I think both teams are at fault and both coaches aren’t happy about it but that’s the way it happened.

However, Franklin head coach Jared Flower did not care.

A six-goal deficit with 80 seconds left, it’s almost impossible. And with the way it was getting chippy and stuff, it’s fine. No worries there.

Flower might care more about the resulting penalties. It was determined, almost one full month after the scrum occurred, that both programs will be placed on probation for next season and fined $500.

Fortunately, both the Knights and Admirals are still eligible to compete in TSSAA lacrosse next season, including the playoffs and championship. Unfortunately, they are now under scrutiny. Any similar incidents over the next 365 days will result in more punitive penalties. They cannot make another misstep— all because of a harmless shoving match during a blowout. Nobody was hurt. No punches were thrown. To punish them at all is lame!
