World Record Discus Thrower Completely Choked At National Championship For Third-Straight Year

Mykolas Alekna Discus Choke National Championship

Mykolas Alekna holds the world record in the discus as the No. 1 thrower in the world right now. However, the Cal star completely choked at the track and field national championship for the third-straight year.

A gold medal is the one thing that evades him as a collegiate athlete.

Alekna hails from Vilnius, Lithuania. He joined the University of California-Berkeley’s track and field program as a true freshman in 2022 as the youngest-ever European discus champion at 19 years old. The rest is history. Literally!

His collegiate accolades include:

  • Two-time Pac-12 Discus Champion
  • ACC Discus Champion
  • Seven-time Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
  • Two-time ACC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
  • Three-time USTFCCCA First-Team All-American
  • Two-time All-Pac-12 First Team
  • All-ACC First Team
  • USTFCCA West Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year
  • Two-time NCAA Discus Silver Medal
  • NCAA Discus Bronze Medal

His international accolades include:

  • European U23 Discus Champion
  • World U20 Discus Champion
  • European Discus Bronze Medalist
  • European Discus Silver Medalist
  • European Discus Champion
  • Olympic Discus Silver Medalist

Mykolas Alekna is the youngest man to ever surpass 70 meters in the discus. He also became the first man over 75 meters with a world record throw of 75.76 meters back in April.

Needless to say, Alekna is No. 1 for a reason. And yet, he once again failed to get the job done at the NCAA Championships in Eugene. His second- and third-place finishes during his first two tries at a national title were surprising. This latest result was shocking on a much greater level.

Alekna committed a foul on four of his six throws. His best throw of the evening fell nine meters short of his world record. The poor result opened the door for Oklahoma’s Ralford Mullings to pull a stunning upset. He also set a meet record.

This should not discredit the clutch performance from Mullings. However, Mykolas Alekna put up one of his worst throws of his entire career on the biggest stage to finish second.

What’s the deal? Did he try to go too big? Was his head not in it? Does he have the yips?

Mykolas Alekna won the European Championship more than three years ago. Since then, he has finished either second or third at every single one of his championship meets— including the Olympics. This latest collapse sours an incredible career. It was dissapointing.
