Sorato Shimizu is a name to know in track and field. The 16-year-old sprinter hails from Japan and will very soon be running alongside the best runners in the sport as a high schooler.
He qualified for the world championships with a U-18 world record!
Shimizu was not previously on my radar before his most recent race. I did not even know his name! There are a lot of young athletes who burst onto the scene in track and field as an amateur but they often fizzle out before they turn pro. I do not expect this latest phenom to be a flash in the pan.
Who is Sorato Shimizu?
Shimizu is currently a student at Seiryo High School in Ishikawa, Japan. Born in 2009, he will not even turn 17 until February. He is a junior.
Although Shimizu runs multiple events during high school competition, the 100-meter and 200-meter flat are his specialties. World Athletics currently ranks him as the No. 377-ranked sprinter in the 100 but that ranking is only going to rise.
No 16-year-old is faster!
The Inter-High School Championships are currently underway in Japan at Atsubetsu Park Stadium in Sapporo. That gave Sorato Shimizu his first opportunity to run against top competition.
He left them all in the dust.
The 16-year-old posted a blazing fast 10.00 in the 100-meter final. It was a wind-legal result with a tailwind of +1.7!

First and foremost, Shimizu’s run broke the Japanese high school record of 10.01. The previous time was set by Yoshihide Kiryu in 2013.
Kiryu went on to run at the Olympics. I fully expect Shimizu to be there sooner than later.
Not only did he break a national record, it was also a world record in the Under-18 age category!
What is next?
Perhaps most importantly, Sorato Shimizu cleared the entry standard for the World Championships. He is one step closer to running against the top professionals before his senior year of high school. This will be the run that puts him on the map but he is still a bit dissapointed.
“I was determined to run under 10 seconds heading into the final,” said Shimizu. “I’m happy to have set a high school record. I’d like to get a taste of [the World Championships] if I can make it.”
If Shimizu is going to run at Worlds, he will do so in his home country. The meet will be held in Tokyo in September.
