The Golden State Valkyries did Julie Vanloo so dirty. Her Belgium basketball teammates are speaking out against the newest team in the WNBA for how they treated their star point guard.
It is a terrible look for the organization!
Vanloo, 32, played her first season in the WNBA in 2024. She did not have any issues playing for her home country during the Olympics because of the extended All-Star break. The same cannot be said for EuroBasket in 2025. She had to leave the Valkyries in the middle of the regular season to play for a second-straight European championship with Team Belgium. They won the tournament on Saturday.
While the majority of the Belgian National Team returned home to a huge celebration in Brussels, Vanloo immediately got right on the plane to fly 15+ hours to report back to Golden State. However, she was waived by the team as soon as she landed. Literally.
Julie Vanloo posted the following message about the unfortunate and frustrating sequence of events:
(@julie35vanloo)To be fair to the Valkyries, this was the only way to go about the situation. They had to cut Vanloo when she was back in the United States for visa purposes. This decision allows her a 30-day grace period to find a new team. And yet, it is still an awful look for the organization based on prior threats and various conversations leading up to (and during) the international competition. It could’ve waited until Vanloo got the chance to celebrate the European championship to cut her. It handled the entire situation poorly.
Vanloo’s Belgian teammates are outraged. Emma Meesseman responded directly to Golden State.
She also posted the following message to her story:
Julie Allemand called it “bulls—.” Kyara Linskens, who was cut by the Valkyries right before EuroBasket, also expressed her frustrations.
Even EuroBasket came to the Belgian star’s support.
Julie Vanloo commented back to say it was all worth it, no matter what. While that may be true, she obviously wishes it were different. The Golden State Valkyries did her dirty.
