College football season is right around the corner and players are already back on campus for summer workouts with fall camp just a few weeks away. As the hot sun beats down, a special electrolyte shot is keeping Florida Atlantic from cramping.
There isn’t much to it but the secret formula has been released!
Florida Atlantic University is located in Boca Raton, Florida. Not every day is the exact same, obviously, but the odds are high that it will be hot and humid with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon pretty much every day from the start of June through at least the end of August. College football practice in the dog days of summer in the southeastern region of the Sunshine State can be brutal.
Pretty much everywhere it’s going to be hot.
Looking ahead at the forecast, temperatures in Boca Raton are expected to exceed 88º Fahrenheit for the rest of July and the entirety of August. There will be a 10-day stretch right before the start of fall camp where it will not dip below 80º at any point during the day.
The heat, combined with 70-90% humidity makes it “feel like” 100º pretty much as soon as the sun rises. If you’ve ever been to the south in the summer, you know the feeling. It’s sticky. It’s hot. The air feels like you’re breathing soup.
As a result, it is very easy to become dehydrated or lack the proper electrolytes. That is especially true for the Owls as they partake in the final few weeks of offseason workouts. Conditions are brutal!
Cramps are common.
Exercise-associated muscle cramps are often linked to electrolyte imbalances. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are crucial to muscle function like contraction and relaxation.
To work out in Florida during summer requires proper levels of those three aforementioned elements. A lack of sodium, potassium and magnesium cause cramps.
They are most likely to occur during or after strenuous activity in hot and humid conditions because of the increased levels of sweat. Sweat, which is primarily water, also releases electrolytes, urea, and small amounts of proteins and carbohydrates from the body. You’re going to sweat more in the heat. Duh.
What is the solution?
FAU football nutrition intern Kaity is in charge of the athletes’ fuel. Her job is to make sure the players have access to plenty of healthy snacks designed for energy, recovery and various training goals.
She also works hard to keep them from cramping. The Owls use secret “cramp shots” to keep their athletes on the field. They are made from the following recipe:
Admittedly, this approach to the cramp shots feels very ineffective and costly. Why not use powdered Powerade mix and buy the electrolytes in bulk instead of using multiple bottles and packets? There must be a reason. I digress.
If you want to scale it down, this is how to do it:
- One bottle of Powerade
- Two packets of Pedialyte or MyHy
- Two packets of Right Stuff
POOF! Cramps be gone.
