Historically speaking, the Open Championship is the hardest of golf’s four major championships to predict. But one computer model has seen incredible success in the most recent 15 majors dating back to 2020.
I recently published a feature on the 14 golfers I think are most likely to win the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. It seems the computer and I think alike because there is a lot of overlap.
Picking The 2025 Open Championship Winner At Royal Portrush
The aforementioned computer model comes from SportsLine who claims “the model is up over $8,500 on its best bets since June 2020.”
I came across this on Golf Digest, one of the more trusted publications in the golf world, and they claim this model ‘hit the 15 recent major championship winners.’
It is hard to tell what specifically “hit the” is referring to here because the model spit out 10 potential winners. Is it a 1-in-10 hit? Is it cumulative winnings if you bet on all 10? That part is unclear.
What do know is the model appears to identify, with consistent accuracy, the 10 golfers who are most likely to win. And for the 153rd Open Championship, here is how that shakes out:
1. Scottie Scheffler
2. Jon Rahm
3. Xander Schauffele
4. Rory McIlroy
5. Bryson DeChambeau
6. Tommy Fleetwood
7. Ludvig Aberg
8. Shane Lowry
9. Justin Thomas
10. Tyrrell Hatton
Of those listed, only Justin Thomas doesn’t appear on my list of the 14 golfers most likely to win at Royal Portrush. I also added Collin Morikawa (past winner), Joaquin Niemann (ready to break through, accurate), Brooks Koepka (major championship killer), J.J. Spaun (U.S. Open winner, highly accurate), and Viktor Hovland.
With all of that in mind, I’m backing a long shot this week: Tommy Fleetwood. He is due. His time is coming.
Tommy Fleetwood ranks 3rd overall on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green. Whichever golfer wins the Open Championship at Royal Portrush will need to be highly accurate off the tee and approaching the green. Tommy is that dude.
He also has extensive experience on links golf courses. At the very least, I expect a top-5 finish from Fleetwood this week.
