When healthy, New Orleans Saints star Chris Olave is one of the best wide receivers in the entire NFL. Unfortunately for Olave, he hasn’t often been healthy of late.
After playing in 31 games across his first two years in the league, Olave played just eight games in 2025 due to ongoing concussion issues, which some people have blamed on former quarterback Derek Carr.
In order to protect himself from further head injuries during Saints training camp, Olave has started wearing a Guardian Cap: the soft shell helmet players can put over their normal helmet. But Olave’s Guardian Cap is different from most. It’s significantly larger and resembles something out of the movie “Spaceballs.”

Chris Olave Showed Up To Saints Camp With A Massive Looking Guardian Cap
Football fans were quick to take note of the unique piece of equipment and immediately began making jokes.
“They gave my boy Olave the Guardian of the Galaxy cap,” one fan posted on X.
“The NFL Blitz ‘Big Head’ cheat code mode on for training camp is hysterical,” wrote another.
But Olave isn’t concerned with the way he looks. Instead, he’s focused on returning to the field and playing to the best of his abilities, which he fully expects to do in 2025.
“They said I was OK back in December when they cleared me,” he told reporters last month. “It was just unlucky situations I was being put in. God’s got me at the end of the day. I’m not worried about nothing. So, just got to go out there 100% and be ready.
“That was really my first major injury. … Just not being able to go and practice and go to meetings with my guys was the worst part, but I feel like I’m ready. I was training and lifting and everything in December. So, I feel like I’m good.”
What Is A Guardian Cap?
The Guardian Cap, which was developed in the early 2010s, is a set of soft-shelled pads that players wear over traditional football helmets. The aim of the Gaurdian Cap is to reduce the risk of concussions and other head injuries from impact-related events.
So, how effective are they? NFL research shows that the cap can absorb at least 10 percent of the force of a hit to the head, significantly reducing the chance of concussion. Which is why we’re seeing more and more players use them in recent years.
However, not all players are using Guardian Caps. In fact, some players are downright refusing to use the caps despite a history of head injuries. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is perhaps the most notable case of a player turning down the option despite several concussions. Tagovailoa states that the reason he won’t wear is a one is a “personal choice,” but he refused to elaborate on that choice.
As for Olave, if he is healthy this season, it’s a huge boost for the Saints, as well as rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who New Orleans drafted with the 40th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
