George Herman Ruth, better known as Babe Ruth, was charged with fraud in the state of Tennessee after allegedly using the names of hundreds of dead or retired baseball players to make false claims for payouts in class action settlements.

But there’s a catch.

It is, of course, not that Babe Ruth. The legendary New York Yankees slugger died in 1948 at the age of 53. So it couldn’t possibly be him who committed these alleged crimes.

Tennessee Man With Same Name As Babe Ruth Facing Serious Fraud Charges

Instead, George Herman Ruth, a 69-year-old man from Morristown, Tennessee, faces 91 counts in an indictment handed down in U.S. District Court in Greeneville, Tennessee, on Aug. 12, according to a report from ESPN.

The  U.S. attorney’s office states that Ruth is charged with mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, fraudulent use of Social Security numbers, money laundering, making false statements to his probation officer, and possessing firearms after having previously been convicted of felonies.

According to the ESPN report, the indictment claims that Ruth obtained or attempted to obtain more than $550,000 via his fraudulent scheme. Ruth sought payouts in lawsuit settlements that ranged from contact lens pricing allegations to claims of racial discrimination against a staffing agency.

This isn’t the first time he’s attempted the alleged scheme, either.

In 2020, he was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in Indiana federal court to a scheme to commit Social Security fraud. He was later placed on probation from October 2023 to July 2025, after which he was hit with additional charges involving his latest alleged crimes.

In keeping with the theme, Ruth allegedly claimed to be various players from several defunct teams. Those teams include the Philadelphia Athletics, the St. Louis Browns, and the Kansas City Packers. So at the very least, he was era accurate.

Unfortunately, this Babe Ruth has brought great shame to the real Babe Ruth, even decades after his passing.
