Comedian, writer, and actor Kumail Nanjiani has opened up about the failure of Marvel Studios’ 2021 film Eternals. According to Nanjiani, the film’s face-plant sent him to therapy.
Eternals, released in 2021, had all of the makings of a promising project for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was directed by Chloe Zhao, fresh off of her Best Picture win for Nomadland. It featured an eclectic cast of both veterans and up-and-comers in Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. It featured a massive scope and cosmic premise. And yet, it just didn’t come together.
Marvel certainly had high hopes for Eternals, as Nanjiani says he signed on for six films. That certainly seems unlikely to happen, though, which is a fact that the former Silicon Valley star has been reckoning with in therapy.
Marvel Studios’ Eternals bombing as bad as it did sent Kumail Nanjiani into therapy
“I talked about how I was in this big movie. It came out right after COVID, so I had a year and a half at home to just be like, ‘Oh, when this thing comes out!’ But then it came out and it got really bad reviews and it didn’t do that well. It shattered me too much. That’s when I was like, ‘Oh I need to go to therapy to figure this out,’” he said on Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast.
“I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be my job for the next 10 years. I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign up for all this stuff. And you’re like, ‘This is the next 10 years of my life, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year and, in between, I’ll do my own little things, whatever I want to do.’ And then none of that happened.”
Based on the reported cast of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it does not appear as though the Eternals will have a role in either of those films, meaning we’ll likely never see them again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nanjiani has a handful of projects set to release in the coming years, such as the movies Driver’s Ed, Ella McCay, The Breadwinner, and The Wrong Girls.
