California High School Football Team Relocated After Botched Fireworks Show Torches $3M Field

A high school football program in state of California has been forced to relocate after a fire torched its $3 million field. Mt. Diablo will have to play its home games at nearby Concord across the first two weeks of the year.

It’s not yet known if the blaze was set on purpose. Officials at this point in time blame a botched fireworks show for the mishap.

Mt. Diablo is a high school located in Concord, California, just outside of San Francisco. The football program just won its first league championship in five decades. It was prepping to defend that title in 2025.

It will have to do so outside of the confines of its own facility.

Mt. Diablo had just wrapped up a $3 million playing field facelift. The “state of the art” surface revamp was completed in March. Just five months later, the turf’s been ruined.

The program will not get the opportunity to play on the new field, at least not in Game 1 of the upcoming season.

Mt. Diablo was slated to start its 2025 campaign at home in each of the first two contests. Instead, it will now host at Concord High, who offered its field as a temporary home.

Meanwhile, the school is looking to get to work on fixing the damage.

School officials told the newspaper that it hopes to repair the field in the next few weeks, which won’t be easy considering the high quality of the turf. If it’s not ready by the third week of the season, more adjustments will need to be made.

The Red Devils were set to host eight games this year. MaxPreps shows the schedule starting with six straight matchups at home.

That slate will now be readjusted. The full impact of the fire won’t be known until the damage has been dealt with.

What caused the Mt. Diablo fire?

To this point, details remain unclear. There was initially speculation that the torching was intentional.

“The minute I heard, my heart dropped,” said Mike Parodi, a fellow high school football coach in the state of California. “As someone from a public school, we know how hard it is to get a project like that done. To have a hater in the community to feel it’s necessary to ruin it for a bunch of kids is disgusting.”

Reports from police refute that conjecture. Officials instead suggest the blaze could’ve been accidental. A botched fireworks display might be to blame.

Details are still being sorted out. Accidental or not, the fire is a major blow to the Mt. Diablo team.

The Red Devils will look to put the adversity behind them and start the season on a strong note.

They’ll “host” Terra Linda at Concord High School on Friday night in non-league action.
