A man in Kenya recently ended up in hot water over a video that captured him pouring beer down an elephant’s trunk in a nature preserve, and the story took an unexpected turn when we tried to figure out his identity and discovered he’s a convicted drug dealer who once played an instrumental role in providing people in Ibiza with party supplies.

Kenya is one of the many countries in Africa that goes to great lengths to prevent poachers from targeting the endangered species that roam its lands—including the more than 35,000 elephants that currently call it home.

There are dozens of national parks, preserves, and sanctuaries that allow visitors to get up close and personal with those massive beasts (and other protected animals that can be found within Kenya’s borders), and you’re obviously expected to avoid doing anything that has the potential to put them in danger if you head to one of them.

However, one man found himself at the center of an investigation after he posted a video of himself giving beer to an elephant, and we ended up going down quite the rabbit hole on a quest for some more information.

A convicted drug lord known as “El Sapo” is being investigated for pouring beer down an elephant’s trunk

Ol Jogi Conservancy boasts a population of approximately 500 elephants that roam the 145-square-mile expanse in the heart of Kenya. That includes Bupa, a male that was rescued from Zimbabwe in 1989 and had resided at the preserve for more than three decades.

According to the BBC, Bupa was at the center of a video that was filmed by a visitor who was sipping on a can of Tusker beer before pouring some of the liquid down the animal’s trunk—a stunt the conservacy says transpired last year but did not come to their attention until the perpetrator recently posted it on Instagram before taking it down due to the backlash he received.

The Kenya Wildlife Service says it is conducting an investigation, and while he has not been officially identified by the authorities, he did leave a trail of breadcrumbs that made it possible to track down his identity.

The video was posted to the Instagram account for a company called Skydive Rhino Kenya, which features pictures and videos of the same man posing and interacting with a menagerie of exotic animals. His name is not listed on the account or the website that’s still under construction, but the company in question was named as a defendant in an asset seizure lawsuit that was filed in a high court in Nairobi in June.

That filing claims a French national (who also holds a Spanish passport) was paid $93,000 for falsely claiming “he was able to transport by air 500 kgs of high value cargo from Kenya to Dubai.”

That man just so happens to share a name with a drug lord who moved to Kenya after serving close to four years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering charges linked to the hash, ecstasy, and cocaine he smuggled into Ibiza for decades before being caught.

If there’s any lingering doubt, the same man is featured in a number of pictures on another Instagram account with the handle “professional_survivor_rhino,” where he identifies himself and links to an Amazon Prime documentary chronicling the exploits of the life he left behind.

What a world.
