The post-Shedeur Sanders for the Colorado Buffaloes got off to a rough start in Week 1 with a 27-20 home loss to Georgia Tech. But things could’ve been far different if not for some brutal late-game clock management by head coach Deion Sanders.
After the Yellow Jackets took a 27-20 lead thanks to a late rushing touchdown by quarterback Haynes King, the Buffaloes had the ball with 1:07 to go and a chance to tie the game or even win it.
Transfer quarterback Kaidon Salter began the drive with a 2-yard pass to wide receiver Micah Welch, which took 16 seconds off the clock. Salter then completed an 11-yard pass to Hykeem Williams, but rather than use one of his two remaining timeouts, Sanders let the clock run.
On third down, Salter ran for a first down, but the clock was all the way down to 18 seconds. After two more plays, Colorado was faced with a Hail Mary from midfield, which fell short, ending the game with both timeouts in hand and sending the Buffs home with a loss.
Deion Sanders Gives Baffling Clock Management Explanation
After the game, members of the media asked Sanders why he didn’t use his timeouts sooner, allowing his offense more time to operate. His answer left much to be desired.

“I think we got out of bounds a couple of times,” Sanders said. “We didn’t have to take them. That’s what transpired. We got out of bounds I think on both sidelines. That’s what happened. After the first, I think we got a good play and we caught the ball, I think, for nine yards. We had one yard to go, so if you get the first down, the clock stops. It don’t make sense to really use your timeout in that sense.”
Yikes.
I mean, he had to come up with some sort of explanation. But Sanders cost his team about 40 of the 67 seconds they had to use. That’s just not great coaching! And if Colorado is going to have any success this year, it needs Deion Sanders to be better.
