Drew Mestemaker continues to prove his doubters wrong. The former walk-on will be the starting quarterback at the University of North Texas this fall.
The news comes less than two weeks out from a season opener against Lamar. The passer wasted no time cashing in on his new role.
Mestemaker has defied the odds on his college football journey. He was a team captain at Austin Vandegrift High School in Texas before walking on with the Mean Green.
He’d primarily played safety and punter before moving onto college, where he’s since made his return under center.
Drew Mestemaker will make his second NCAA start.
The quarterback hadn’t started a game as signal caller since the ninth grade. He was called upon by the North Texas coaching staff to lead the offense in the team’s most recent postseason contest.
The freshman shined in his starting duty, accounting for 448 yards of total offense against Texas State in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl.
“Drew’s always been one of the hardest workers I know,” said teammate Landon Sides. “Y’all saw it in the bowl game. The one start he got, he produced, had an amazing game, and went viral.”

He earned a scholarship offer from the school after that showing. He’ll now be able to build upon the production as a redshirt freshman.
Mestemaker won the starting role in a battle with Miami transfer Reese Poffenbarger and fellow quarterback Chris Jimerson Jr. He will take the first snap when the Mean Green takes the field against Lamar.
Soon after the news was announced, he signed with an NIL agency. Mestemaker will look to capitalize financially on his growing fame.
The QB is now a client of Process Sports Management.

The agency’s clientele includes athletes from the University of Kentucky, West Virginia University, the University of Wisconsin, and more.
You can now add Drew Mestemaker to that list.
The passer’s story will be one to follow in the 2025 college football season. After four years without a start under center, he takes the reins to the Mean Green’s air raid attack.
“Drew is not even close to his ceiling,” said head coach Eric Morris. “I’ve been blessed to be around some good ones and NFL guys. He has some traits that are as good or better than some of those guys playing on Sundays.”
He’s proven he can be effective in the offense. He’ll look to continue exceeding expectations in Year 2 with the program.
Hopefully, that results in some notable NIL income opportunities moving forward. He’ll have eyes on him when taking that first snap in Denton.
