It took longer than he would have preferred, but Rory McIlroy finally completed the career grand slam earlier this year after getting the victory that had long eluded him at The Masters. He left the course with the green jacket and trophy that’s presented to the winner, but he also raided the gift shop for more than 1,000 flags commemorating the year he got over the hump.
In 2014, Rory McIlroy came one leg away from capping off the career grand slam when the man who’d previously reigned supreme at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship won The British Open for the first time. He needed to win The Masters to join the quintet of golf legends who’d previously achieved that feat, but doing so turned out to be much easier said than done.
The Northern Irishman recorded four Top 5 finishes over the course of the next decade—including a runner-up showing at the tournament Scottie Scheffler won by three strokes in 2022—but he also missed the cut two times in the span of three years and was seemingly haunted by the final round collapse that saw him blow a four-stroke lead in 2011.
However, he was finally able to exorcise those demons in 2025 by beating Justin Rose in a playoff to get his long-awaited victory at Augusta National, and he spared no expense when it came to securing a sizeable number of souvenirs.
Rory McIlroy spent a fortune to scoop up every single flag that was left at the Masters Shop after getting the elusive win

Patrons who are lucky enough to attend The Masters in person can take advantage of the two shops where the tournament’s highly sought-after merchandise can be purchased. It’s not rare for people to drop thousands of dollars on shirts, hats, and the gnomes that have become a very valuable collectible, and Rory McIlroy also went on a bit of a spending spree this year.
On Tuesday, McIlroy got the chance to reflect on the aftermath of his win while gearing up for the Tour Championship and revealed he cleared out the remaining inventory of the flags that serve as a popular canvas for signatures after the initial celebration died down.

He revealed just how large that purchase was, saying:
“They had 1,100 left in the merchandise facility at the end of the week and we took all 1,100. I’ll never get sick of signing them. I’ve been waiting 17 years to sign that flag in the middle, and I’ll never complain about doing that.”
The “in the middle” comment concerns a tradition/superstition related to flags that are emblazoned with The Masters logo that is reserved for the signatures of people who’ve won a green jacket (those who haven’t joined the club are exiled to the yellow outside the green outline of the United States).
I couldn’t find a definitive source for prices at the Masters Shop in 2025, but a list of items from the previous year says the flags were going for $32.55 a pop. That means McIlroy spent close to $40,000 to buy the remainder of the inventory (if we assume he didn’t get a bulk discount), which sounds like a lot of money until you realize it’s a little less than 1% of the $4.2 million he got for winning.
