South Carolina football player LaNorris Sellers recently detailed new offensive coordinator Mike Shula’s unique method of motivating quarterbacks. That tactic includes poop-themed shaming when the wrong reads are made.
In explaining that motivational approach, he exposed his team’s young quarterback room. The Gamecocks are thin at the position.
Sellers is obviously a star. The passer burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman, leading his squad to nine wins and a near College Football Playoff appearance.
The Gamecocks took down the likes of Oklahoma, Clemson, and Missouri. If the ball had bounced their way in close losses to LSU and Alabama, it could’ve been a storybook season.
Sellers’ is arguably the top dual threat signal caller in the nation. First-round NFL Draft buzz already surrounds his upcoming campaign.
He’ll be working with a new offensive coordinator in 2025, who has an interesting way of highlighting teachable moments to his players.
Mike Shula will call plays for the South Carolina football team.
He’s been around the block a time or two. Shula played quarterback at Alabama before moving to the sidelines. He’s since landed gigs in both the NFL and NCAA.
Shula was the head coach of the Crimson Tide from 2003-2006 before being replaced by Nick Saban. He held roles as an assistant with the Bucs, Dolphins, Bears, Panthers, Jaguars, Giants, Broncos, and Bills.
He joined the South Carolina coaching staff in 2024 and was elevated to offensive coordinator following the departure of Dowell Loggains to Appalachian State.
During his time with the Giants, he picked up an unexpected coaching method which LaNorris Sellers spoke on during the offseason.

Shula has an excrement-resembling mold on his desk. He asks that his quarterbacks carry the poop-like cast around after identifying on-field mistakes during film review.
“If I do something bad, he’ll say, ‘Go get the dump off my desk,'” said Sellers. “He makes us put it on his desk and is like, ‘That’s what you just did to me…’ It looks like real poop.”
Head coach Shane Beamer followed up on the admission, wishing that the details of the motivational tactic would’ve stayed in house. Still, he’s all for finding ways to get the best out of his players.

When asked about how many times he’s personally had to grab the poop, Sellers exposed South Carolina’s quarterback situation.
The Gamecocks don’t have much experience behind LaNorris Sellers.
“I haven’t [had to grab the poop] a lot,” he said, “but Cutter [Woods], Air [Noland], those guys have done it a lot just because they don’t really like know the system. Obviously, if you don’t know it, you’re going to make some mistakes. It happens quite a bit.”
South Carolina’s quarterback situation is far from dire. There is talent, and it’s led by one of college football’s top players.
Still, should Sellers miss action, the Gamecocks will be forced to call upon young passers with little experience or knowledge of the playbook.
Air Noland figures to be the No. 2 option after transferring from Ohio State. A former four-star prospect, he left Columbus for Columbia this past December.
The lefty’s recruiting comp references Michael Penix Jr., but he’s yet to put it together in a game setting. Woods and fellow freshman Jimmy Francis have not seen the field, either.
LaNorris Sellers has played in 15 football games at South Carolina. His three reserves combine for zero college snaps. Concerns about their ability to run the offensive system are legitimate given their frequent subjection to Mike Shula’s poop shaming.
Experience isn’t the end-all-be-all, which Sellers proved last year after replacing Spencer Rattler. Still, if the star signal caller is unavailable for action as he was last season, the Gamecocks will be counting on unproven talent under center.
