Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm was forced to remove a glove that showed support of the Little League World Series during a game against the Washington Nationals.
The umpire who made that call is catching some heat from MLB viewers. In the end, he made the right decision, according to the rulebook.
Strahm entered a Friday matchup against the NL East rival Nationals in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was wearing a special mitt with the signatures of LLWS players.
He was told to change gloves upon request from the Washington dugout.

Strahm donned a “pencil glove” that was yellow, pink, and black on one side and white on the other. On that large white portion were signatures from a Little League team in the Challenger division.
The Challenger division “is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges.” It was founded in 1989.
Strahm attempted to highlight the league and show support with his signed glove. He was unable to pitch with the mitt on during game action.
The Nationals caught flak for requesting the mitt be removed, as did the umpire behind the dish. It was, however, the right call.
Strahm broke Rule 3.07
That guideline reads, “The pitcher’s glove may not, exclusive of piping, be white, gray, nor, in the judgment of an umpire, distracting in any manner.”
The umpire-in-chief shall cause a glove that violates Rules 3.07(a) or (b) to be removed from the game, either on his own initiative, at the recommendation of another umpire or upon complaint of the opposing manager that the umpire-in-chief agrees has merit.
Matt Strahm’s glove was white. The Nationals deemed it distracting. Umpires made the decision to have it removed from play and received some backlash after the fact.
Neither party likely knew the meaning behind the mitt. According to the rulebook, the right decision was made.
