Nebraska Cornhuskers hitter Harper Murray is the most controversial player in college volleyball. She showed her true colors during the first match of her junior season.
The star outside hitter made sure to apologize to her opponent after a six pack to the face.
Although it is not uncommon for college volleyball players to get pulverized in the back row, there are two ways to approach the awkwardness. Harper did the right thing!
Who is Harper Murray?
It would not be overstated to declare Murray as one of the 10 best hitters in the country. The 6-foot-2 outside led the Cornhuskers in kills per set last season, which led her to be named as a First-Team All-Big Ten player and a Second-Team All-American.
She arrived to Lincoln as the Gatorade National Player of the Year and immediately lived up to the hype.
Unfortunately, Murray found herself in a bit of trouble in the spring of 2024 when she was charged with DUI. Just a few weeks later, she was accused of shoplifting five gold rings from a local retail store at a total of approximately $65. Security cameras reportedly captured her attempt to conceal the rings as she walked out of the front door. It was a tough few weeks.
“I deeply regret some of the recent decisions I‘ve made, and the pain that I have caused my family, my team, volleyball fans, and everyone who has supported me,” Murray wrote on instagram. “I take full responsibility for my actions. This past month has been a great opportunity for me to recenter and focus on myself to get back to who I am. Thank you to everyone who has shown me grace, kindness, and compassion. When the time is right I hope to share my story more and in the process hopefully help others. Again thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in me.”
People make mistakes. Especially college students.
And yet, people outside of Nebraska are not quick to forget or forgive. They love to hate Harper Murray!
True character always prevails…
Not only is Murray cast as a volleyball villain because of the off-court incidents, she is also one of the most polarizing personalities in the country when on the court. Take this moment from the 2025 season-opener for example:

It is not hard to figure out what Murray said in that moment!
Opposing fanbases do not appreciate the attitude. They root hard against her for more reasons than one.
However, Harper Murray showed her true character against Pittsburgh. She went out of her way to cross under the net and apologize to a Panthers defender after she hit her directly in the face with a huge kill.

Murray did not have to apologize. People get in the face in volleyball. It happens! No big deal.
She chose to do so anyway. The biggest villain in college volleyball showed her true character.
