Watches are meant to be worn, and it’s hard to blame anyone who’s dropped tens of thousands of dollars on one for wanting to show it off. However, one man who decided to rock his Patek Phillipe while wakesurfing on a lake in Texas ended up regretting that decision before he was reunited with the timepiece courtesy of the team of divers who managed to track it down.
There are plenty of horror stories about people who decided to propose near a body of water before managing to drop the ring into it, as well as some slightly more heartwarming tales involving beachgoers who managed to lose a wedding band in the sand or the ocean only to be reunited with it thanks to an assist from a stranger.
If you drop something into a sizeable aquatic expanse, you’re usually forced to accept you’re never going to see it again.
Of course, that’s easier said than done when the object in question boasts significant sentimental and/or monetary value, and a guy in Texas who was separated from his luxury watch while unwinding on Lake Austin understandably went to some great lengths to try to get it back.
A man paid a team of divers to comb Lake Austin in a successful quest to retrieve the $60,000 watch he lost while wakesurfing
Patek Philippe is one of the most prestigious watchmakers on the planet, and the company that’s been making them in Switzerland for more than a century has whipped up some insanely expensive timepieces that can sell for millions (and, in some cases, tens of millions) of dollars.
It also offers some relatively modest offerings that will “only” set you back five figures, including the Patek Phillipe Aquanaut that tends to range from $25,000 to $80,000 depending on the model and condition.
As you can probably surmise from the name, the Aquanaut is water-resistant up to 30 meters, and a Texas resident named Colin decided to keep it on his wrist when he recently headed to Lake Austin to do some wakesurfing. Unfortunately, it became dislodged and ultimately ended up on the bottom of the lake more than 20 feet below the surface.
According to a video that was posted by vintage watch expert Mike Nouveau, Colin was on his way to reaching the “Acceptance” stage of the grief process. However, he decided to recruit some divers to explore the area where he dropped the watch in an effort to get it back, and they were able to do exactly that when it was recovered around 20 feet away from the flag he’d planted to help them set up a search radius.

The watch was still ticking when it was brought back to the surface, so it appears it lived up to that water resistance claim.
This actually isn’t the first time a similar situation has unfolded, as a diver in Spain also reunited someone with the Aquanaut they lost in the Mediterranean waters off the coast of Mallorca last year.
