New Orleans Murder Who Organized Jailbreak Is Still On The Run After Three Months With New Appearance

Derrick Groves Update New Orleans Prison Escape Jailbreak

Derrick Groves is the last remaining prisoner who has yet to be captured after a jailbreak in New Orleans. It has been three months since his escape but Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson remains confident that he will soon be brought to justice.

I, on the other hand, am starting to think that he is going to get away with murder… quite literally.

Groves seems to be the ring leader of this whole operation. The other nine escapees were his shields.

Who is Derrick Groves?

The 28-year-old native of New Orleans grew up in the Lower Ninth Ward. Groves, also known as “Woo,” was convicted of murder in October 2024 after he used an assault rifle to kill two separate people at a block party shooting during Mardi Gras.

Neither death was premeditated so the charge was lowered from first-degree to second-degree. He also pleaded guilty to additional manslaughters, involving four separate killings over an 18-month span.

Sheriff Hutson said during her most recent update on the ongoing manhunt that Derrick Groves should not have been at the Orleans Justice Center in the first place. She believes he should’ve instead been held at the high-security Louisiana State Penitentiary known most commonly known as Angola.

Regardless of what Sheriff Hutson might thing, as of right now, Groves is not behind bars at all!

He and nine other prisoners escaped from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16. Surveillance footage shows the inmates remove a toilet to access a maintenance chase and later scaling barbed wire fences on their way to freedom.

The other nine prisoners have been captured. Derrick Groves has not.

The New Orleans prison break manhunt continues…

This incident immediately triggered widespread criticism of Sheriff Hutson’s leadership, as well as city infrastructure failures and inter-agency communication gaps. Rightfully so. There is no telling how long it will take for Derrick Groves to end up in custody.

Local, state and even federal agencies like the FBI are actively searching for the remaining escapee. There is a $50,000 reward out for any information that would lead to his arrest.

Prosecutors say Groves has evaded capture by maintaining a low profile— suggesting that he might even be hiding in the Ninth Ward. They describe him as intelligent, polite, and manipulative.

Some people also think he might’ve changed his appearance, but that theory has yet to be confirmed by the authorities. Just memes.

Although it is just a theory on social media, I am starting to believe there is some truth to the appearance change. How has he been able to lay this low for this long? Nobody recognized him?! It is a mystery.

“We know he’s getting help also out there in the community, which is a little shocking that given what his history is,” Sheriff Hutson said. Here is her full update:

Anyone with information is asked to reach out to the following authorites.

  • FBI: 1-800-CALL-FBI
  • Crime Stoppers: 504-822-1111
  • Louisiana State Police Fusion Center: 225-925-4192

I am sure a call to 9-1-1 would work just the same. Sheriff Hutson clearly needs whatever help she can get.
