Little League World Series Umpire At The Center Of Debate Absolutely Made The Correct Decision

Little League World Series Controversy Umpire

An umpire at the Little League World Series found himself at the center of controversy during an elimination game at the Midwest Regional. He absolutely made the correct decision.

However, the unusual situation and subsequent ruling sparked widespread debate about the call on the field.

The good news is that the call did not have a direct impact on the outcome. South Dakota was still able to win the game and advanced to the Little League World Series championship bracket.

Little League umpires are volunteers!

Part of the reason that I am choosing to bring this call back up is to protect the umpires. This kind of thing happens every year, where a controversial decision or an objectively bad call spoils the season for a group of 10-to-12-year-olds. The players get angry. The parents get even more so.

Let’s all take a collective deep breath together. These umpires are volunteers. They are giving their time to Little League as a labor of love. This is not their full-time job.

Mistakes are going to happen. One mistake could have an impact the outcome.

As frustrating as it might be, it is not the end of the world. Show some grace!

Right call? Wrong call?

There will also be instances in which the fans are extremely frustrated by an umpire’s decision even though the umpire got it right. That is exactly what happened in Indianapolis earlier this week.

South Dakota, which ultimately went on to win the regional, had a batter called out by the home plate umpire because his bat made contact with the catcher’s glove on his follow-through. The umpire called the play dead and ruled the runner as out at first before the ball landed in the infield and sent the original base runner back to where he started.

It was a strange sequence of events. Everybody on both teams was confused.

A large number of people watching at home thought the umpire got it wrong and preemptively called for an infield fly rule even though there was only a baserunner on first. They were furious.

As it would turn out, those people were incorrect. The umpire ruled interference on the batter. His bat hit the catcher. It was the right call.

The ball is immediately considered dead as soon as the interference occurs and the batter is declared as out. All runners on base must return to the original base.

That is exactly what happened at the Midwest Regional of the Little League World Series. The umpire made the correct ruling.
