Jen Pawol made history over the week as the first woman to ever umpire a Major League Baseball game. Pawol then made even more history when she stepped behind the plate to call balls and strikes in a game between the Marlins and Braves.

So, how did she do?

Pawol’s debut game behind the plate got off to a rough start, as she called Braves starting pitcher Joey Wentz’s first pitch a strike to Xavier Edwards despite it being well inside, off the plate.

But Pawol settled in and had an extremely respectable performance on the whole.

Ump Scorecard Shows Jen Pawol Performed About As Expected In MLB Debut

On Monday morning, the longstanding umpire grading website Ump Scorecards released its performance reviews of every umpire behind the plate for games on Sunday.

Pawol, as it turns out, performed pretty well.

Pawol’s scorecard shows that she had an overall accuracy of 93 percent, with an expected accuracy of 94 percent. So she more or less performed how you’d expect. Her overall consistency sat at 93 percent, while the league average is 94 percent.

In a 7-1 victory for the Braves, Pawol’s calls were estimated to benefit the Marlins to the tune of +0.28 run differential, which isn’t all that uncommon when games aren’t close in the late innings.

She did struggle to a small degree with her called strike accuracy, missing six of 47 calls, for 87 percent. However, the league average for such calls is just 88 percent.

Here’s where things get a bit rough for Pawol. Her 92.72 percent accuracy seems good on the surface, but it ranks 89th of 92 umpires to call a game behind the plate per Ump Scorecards, while her -1.45 accuracy relative to expected was 90th out of 92.

Now, this is admittedly a small sample size. Nothing Pawol called was particularly egregious, and you’d expect her numbers to normalize given more games.

Meanwhile, she finds herself in some “good” company, as veteran umpires Laz Diaz, C.B. Bucknor, and Hunter Wendelstedt all sit in the bottom 10 in the league in accuracy.
