Angel Reese will be suspended by the Chicago Sky for its upcoming WNBA game against the Las Vegas Aces because of “statements detrimental to the team.” She straight-up insulted her teammates.
Her comments were so outrageous that a players-only meeting was called just to air grievances.
Reese has since apologized for what she said but it does not change the fact that she said it. Rachel Banham was completely blindsided by the insulting comments but Ariel Atkins does not have the energy to care.
Angel Reese put her teammates on blast.
The Chicago Sky are one of the worst teams in the WNBA. Reese, who is averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, blamed her teammates for the horrendous losing record.
She threatened to leave the Sky as soon as possible if the organization does not upgrade the roster around her. Her teammates are so terrible that she cannot fathom to play with them in the future.
It was a wild thing to say in a public interview that Reese knew was going to print. The 23-year-old forward might be considered a “star” but it’s not like she is without flaw and she has not earned the right to throw other people under the bus.
And even if she was of that status, which she is not, it’s still a bad look.
The Chicago Sky issued a suspension.
The organization released the following statement in response to Angel Reese’s comments. She will be suspended for being an a-hole.
As you could imagine, her teammates were furious. Ariel Atkins decided to address Angel Reese directly during a players-only meeting earlier this week.
Rachel Banham said she was “blindsided” by the interview when it dropped. The eight-year WNBA veteran would’ve preferred Reese to say what she said behind closed doors but she is too old to care.
“I think I just don’t really care,” she told the Chicago Sun Times. “I’m so over all of this s—. If I was younger, it would have affected me more. But I’m grown, and I just don’t care.
Elizabeth Williams sees it as a learning opportunity for Reese.
“She has a big influence, whether she says something good or bad, people like to interpret it a certain way,” Williams said. “I think she understands she just has to be mindful of the language she uses.
Head coach Tyler Marsh was just as surprised as his players. He never spoke with his star player about her concerns before the interview dropped.
Angel Reese ultimately issued a public apology after her teammates fought back. However, in doing so, she refused to take accountability for her exact words and claimed they were misconstrued.
“So, I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article and how it was misconstrued about what was said,” Reese said. “And I just have to be better with my language. Because I know it’s not the message, it’s the messenger. And understanding what I say can be taken any kind of way. So, I just have to really be better and grow from this.”
The Chicago Sky says the matter is resolved. Is it really?
