Clemson football fans are not particularly happy with Dabo Swinney amid a 1-2 start to the 2025 season. The Tigers have struggled across three weeks of play, losing both of their matchups to Power 4 foes.
Swinney threatened to leave the university and coach elsewhere if the school is “tired of winning.” He did so just as a rival job in the ACC opened up.
The Tigers have won two national championships with Swinney at the helm. They’ve been the gold standard in the league across the last decade.
Since winning it all in 2018, though, the program has taken a step back. The Tigers have lost three games or more in four straight seasons. They appear on their way to a fifth after dropping two of the first three contests.
Whispers of unhappiness arose after a 9-4 campaign in 2023. They grew louder with another four-loss year in 2024 despite an appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Now, they’ve reached a peak.
Is Clemson tired of Dabo Swinney?
Swinney raised the bar for the Tigers. Now, he’s been unable to meet the expectations brought about by his own success.
While fans will always be appreciative of his accomplishments, there’s an uncertainty surrounding the future.
The reason? That’s likely a mix of a few different factors.
Clemson seemed slow to adapt to the new world of NIL and the transfer portal, offering an opportunity for ACC rivals to close the gap. It also probably set them back nationally from a roster standpoint.
Recent hires have been a talking point, too. The Tigers won with Tony Elliot and Brent Venables running the offense and defense, respectively. Both are now P4 head coaches.
Swinney has swung and missed in filling those voids. He’s already hired and fired both initial replacements.
Now, more of the blame is being placed at the top.
Swinney will leave…
If that’s what the Tigers want. He said as much in his most recent press conference.
“I mean, if Clemson is tired of winning, they can send me on my way,” he said after a loss to Georgia Tech. “But I’m gonna go somewhere else and coach. I ain’t going to the beach.
“I’m 55. I got a long way to go. Y’all are gonna have to deal with me for a while.”

There are always options. Teams are always looking for the next successful head coach. This year will be no different. Swinney knows that, as well as the fact that he’d land on his feet elsewhere.
He’d be more than willing to take his production and Top 15 recruiting class with him.
Virginia Tech head football coach Dabo Swinney?
Swinney threatened to go somewhere else to coach. He stated that the Tigers would “have to deal with him for a while,” suggesting a rival program could be an option.
As it so happens, the Virginia Tech job opened up the day before Swinney’s most recent rant. Would he leave for Blacksburg?
There are certainly pros. The Hokies, too, have a strong football pedigree and history of success. He’d be in rich recruiting grounds with access to both North Carolina and the DMV.
In all likelihood, it won’t happen. Swinney would much rather continue adding to what’s been built in Clemson. We’ve heard this rant from the head coach in the past, and yet, he still remains.
With that being said, another ACC program would be happy to have him on the sidelines given his history of success. If the Tigers do decide to part ways at some point in the future, they might just have to coach against him.
