The South Carolina football team fell to SEC rival Vanderbilt on Saturday night in Columbia, 31-7. Former head coach Will Muschamp was in attendance.
Muschamp was seen celebrating the Gamecocks‘ surprising loss from the stands in Williams-Brice Stadium. His guest appearance only salted the home team’s wounds.
Muschamp roamed the sidelines at South Carolina from 2016-2020. He posted a 28-30 overall record across 4+ seasons.
The coach was fired midway through the ’20 campaign following a 2-5 start. He was paid $13 million to leave. After a few years away, he reappeared in South Carolina’s capital city to root against his former employer.
Why was Will Muschamp at the South Carolina football game?
The coach’s son, Whit, is a sophomore at Vanderbilt. A former three-star quarterback recruit, he signed with the program in December of 2023.

As a high school player, he led his team to a 2022 state title. He received a number of notable NCAA offers, choosing the Commodores over the likes of Missouri, Louisville, Virginia, and Ole Miss. Now, he gets to play against his father’s old school yearly.
Whit Muschamp did not see any game action as a freshman, and he’s yet to see the field in Year 2 with Diego Pavia leading the offensive charge. Still, he was able to take in the incredible scenes from the sidelines.
His dad was happy to see his son’s team come out on top. He was all smiles after the game.

The Gamecocks entered a matchup with the Commodores as home favorites riding a 16-game winning streak in the head-to-head series. That success came to a screeching halt.
Vanderbilt jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. They won the game in dominant fashion, stymying the South Carolina offense to the tune of a second half shutout.
Muschamp and his wife were on hand in support of the Commodores. They took joy in their son’s upset victory. It didn’t hurt that it came against his former employer.
