Raccoons are known for being scavengers that don’t really discriminate when it comes to getting their paws on something to eat. However, a trash panda that thought it had struck gold in a dumpster in Kentucky had to be saved by a nurse who gave it CPR after it got drunk on moonshine.

The animal kingdom is home to a number of species that have a reputation for being opportunists. That certainly includes raccoons, which are omnivores that largely subsist on fruit, nuts, and insects in what most people would refer to as “the wild” but are more than happy to take advantage of what humans have left behind for them in populated areas.

The furry creatures are more than happy to dig through trash cans in search of some food and can be particularly bold when they’ve identified a prime source of sustenance; in 2024, a woman in Washington state had to call the police after 100 of them “demanding food” prevented her from entering her home.

That predeliction for dumpster diving can pay dividends, but there are also some potential pitfalls—as evidenced by a strange incident that recently unfolded in Kentucky.

A nurse had to give a raccoon CPR after it got drunk on moonshine and almost drowned in a dumpster

Many wild animals have gotten an unexpected introduction to the concept of fermentation after chowing down on fruit that managed to make them tipsy, and that was the case with a raccoon that ended up in a dumpster outside of a distillery in Kentucky.

According to Lex18, Misty Combs, a registered nurse who’s spent more than two decades working at the Letcher County Health Department in the town of Whitesburg, recently found herself attending to an unexpected patient after coming across a “panicked raccoon” in a parking lot near her place of employment.

That building is located across the street from Kentucky Mist Moonshine, which infuses its signature product with a variety of fruits to whip up different flavors. That includes the peaches that were discarded in a dumpster after being used to make a batch, and Combs eventually realized the raccoon in question was attempting to get inside the receptacle where two of its babies had managed to get stuck.

She used a shovel to remove one of the animals but realized the second one was unresponsive after seeing it face down in a puddle of water it had presumably passed out in after helping itself to some of the booze-filled peaches.

Combs subsequently yanked it out of the dumpster by its tail before performing CPR on the raccoon that eventually coughed up some water and started breathing again.

Officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived on the scene to transport the raccoon to a vet, where it was given fluids and monitored until it “sobered up” before being released back into the parking lot.
