Week 2 of the college football season has come and gone. For some teams, it was a welcomed transition to help flush the sour taste of a disappointing debut. For others, it only further riled the fanbase. Last week, we introduced a new poll for the 2025 campaign. The Brobible Meltdown Meter is now in full effect.
Here, we’ll take a look at 10 teams each week whose fans are on the verge of a breakdown. It could be in reference to coaching, production, or the overall direction of the program. Whatever the case, these schools are moving backwards, at least according to their supporters. Let’s take a look at this week’s Top (Bottom?) 10.
College Football Meltdown Meter Top 10 – Week 2
Some of these names can be found on the Week 1 edition of the poll. Others are newcomers to the unwanted honor. These 10 teams either lost outright as hefty favorites or looked extremely pedestrian in lackluster wins. Is it time to panic? Message boards would lead you to believe that answer is a resounding, “Yes!” Below are the fanbases melting down the most after Week 2.
1) Florida Gators

- Once again, head coach Billy Napier received a vote of confidence from his athletic director in September. That’s never a good sign! Last year, Napier saved his job with a strong close to the season. This year, it would take an incredible run against a ridiculous schedule.
- Entering the new season, several pundits named DJ Lagway the best quarterback in the country. But Lagway certainly didn’t look like it against USF. At some point, the production needs to live up to the hype.
- Where does Florida go from here? We’ve now tried this with several different coaches post-Urban Meyer. There’s no reason the Gators shouldn’t be good, so what’s the problem here?
2) Oklahoma State Cowboys

- Mike Gundy’s seat gets hotter and hotter with each week that goes by. Is he really the problem? The roster in Stillwater stems from a lack of funding. Who else can you get that is better?
- Zane Flores was thrust into a bad situation, sure. There still must be someone who can do better than 67 yards and two interceptions on seven completions. Anyone, really.
- Oregon gained 631 yards of total offense… Nothing more needs to be said.
3) Clemson Tigers

- Where is the offense? It’s a question that’s been asked since Garrett Riley took over as coordinator. Being held to three points in the first half against Troy is unacceptable.
- Cade Klubnik continues to be mediocre. His coach called him out for it after a loss to LSU. That’s not a great sign with conference play around the corner.
- Clemson was 5-of-13 on third and fourth down attempts against a defense that ranked 92nd in scoring a season ago.
4) Arizona State Sun Devils

Arizona State University Athletics
- Sam Leavit wasn’t forced to put the Sun Devils on his shoulders too often last year. But when he was asked to make a play, he often delivered. What the heck has happened since? It can’t just be entirely Cam Skateboo leaving.
- Does Kenny Dillingham’s act wear thin? When you’re winning, Dillingham comes across as a savant and one of the best coaches in the country. But when you stop winning, it suddenly looks a bit corny.
- Will Dillingham stick around? If you think he’s a future star, then he’ll undoubtedly have opportunities elsewhere. Maybe Arizona State is already operating at its ceiling.
5) West Virginia Mountaineers

- To be fair, Ohio is a very good team. Timothée Chalamet knows ball. Buuuuut West Virginia had home-field advantage (on the road) against a Group of
FiveSix opponent. You can’t lose that game. - 250 yards of total offense is pathetic. Nicco Marchiol might just be bad even if the offensive line did not do him any favors.
- 2-for-13 on third downs ultimately proved to be the difference between a win and a loss.
6) Iowa Hawkeyes

- QB Mark Gronowski has not improved the offense. The Hawkeyes scored one touchdown in a rivalry loss to Iowa State and had just 83 passing yards.
- Coaching was conservative. Twice the Hawkeyes faced 4th-and-2 in the redzone. Twice, they settled for field goals despite having a solid run game. One touchdown could’ve changed the outcome.
- Where are the WRs? Iowa has one player with more than 15 receiving yards through two games.
7) Oregon State Beavers

- Oregon State doesn’t have a game on its schedule that it will be favored in until it hosts Lafayette on Oct. 18. The Beavers could be 0-7 by then, and Trent Bray could be long gone.
- Transfer QB Maalik Murphy wasn’t the problem in Saturday’s 36-27 loss to Fresno State. He threw for 371 yards and four touchdowns. But he also had two interceptions. Is paying a QB $2M to play on a team that’s staring down 0-7 really a great use of resources?
- How do you lose a game where you outgain your opponent 544-320 and only lose the turnover battle by one?
8) Syracuse Orange

- Steve Angeli is overpaid.
- The defense must get off of the field on fourth down.
- Fran Brown ran his players after a win. Does that send the wrong message in the current era of college football?
9) Kansas State Wildcats

- Avery Johnson has not lived up to the hype thus far. He played his worst game of the year against Army, throwing for less than 175 yards and a pick.
- What happened to the defense? Kansas State prides itself on toughness. It was outmatched by the Knights, who rushed for 270 yards in the 24-21 upset.
- Third down struggles continue to haunt the offense, which went 2-of-9 on conversion attempts.
10) Virginia Tech Hokies

© Peter Casey/Imagn
- Brent Pry just isn’t very good at this. That is abundantly clear with each passing season. But where in the world does Virginia Tech even go from here?
- The Hokies allowed 262 yards on the ground. They allowed 7.1 yards per carry. Brent Pry was brought in for his defensive prowess. What are we doing here?!
- At what point do you get so far removed from the Frank Beamer Era that people stop taking your program seriously? Has VT already hit that point?
