Ohio High School Football Controversy Extends The Nation’s Longest Winning Streak On Blown Call

Marion Versailles Ohio High School Football Controversy Catch

A major high school football controversy in the state of Ohio allowed Marion Local to extend the longest winning streak in the country to 70 games against Versailles on Friday. However, the Tigers were robbed of a victory over the Flyers on a crucial fourth down play during the fourth quarter.

Video replay was not used to overturn the incorrect call on the field.

This is the unfortunate reality of high school football. Officials can only make their decisions based on what they can see. In this specific instance, what they saw was wrong. It spoiled an upset bid.

Marion Local is the most dominant high school football team in the country right now.

Marion Local High School entered Friday’s home game at 5-0. The Division VII program had not lost in 69 straight games. That was the longest winning streak in the entire country.

Its opponent, Versailles Exempted Village School, started the year at 4-1. It finished last season at 5-6.

These two schools are separated by approximately 15 miles in northwest Ohio. They are located just as far from Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Indiana as they are from Columbus.

Needless to say, based on their respective records, the Tigers were not supposed to beat the Flyers. And yet, they were just 12 minutes and 11 seconds away from a win.

A controversial catch spoiled the upset bid.

Versailles took a 19-7 lead late into the third quarter. Marion scored with 11 seconds left in the third to cut its deficit to just five points at the start of the fourth quarter.

That leads us to the 5:50 mark.

The Tigers’ defense stepped up big to stop the Flyers’ offense on third down inside their own 40-yard-line to set up fourth and long. A turnover on downs would’ve given the ball back to Versailles with a lead.

Marion quarterback Brennan Hess threw up a prayer in the direction of Cale Nagel at the 20-yard-line. He was heavily covered.

Nagel went airborne and got a hand on the ball but, when he landed, the officials did not signal for a catch or an incomplete pass. The head referee called for help. A second referee ran out to discuss.

They ultimately ruled the play as a catch for Nagel and a first down for the Flyers. Marion scored the go-ahead, eventual game-winning touchdown just a few moments later.

Unfortunately, it was the wrong call. Nagel did not make the catch. The Tigers were robbed.

Here’s another angle:

A photo captured by Press Pros Feature Photos (scroll to the bottom) shows Nagel on the ground with a defender next to him. The ball is nowhere to be found.

Versailles lost to Marion by one point. The nation’s longest winning streak remains intact at 70 games even though it should’ve ended at 69. That was not a catch.
