There was no bigger story in college football this week than Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer and his successful surgery to repair a broken hand. However, local law enforcement shielded him from the media upon return to Norman.
You could not see him get off of the private jet.
Head college football coach Brent Venables thought it was “weird” that people gathered at the airport in the first place. I think it is a testament that student journalism is alive and well!
John Mateer’s surgery was a success.
Mateer, the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, broke his hand during a win over Auburn on Saturday. According to teammate Peyton Bowen, he at no point gave any indication that he was hurt.
And yet, the injury was bad enough to require surgery.
Mateer flew to Cedars-Sinai Orthopedic Center in Los Angeles for the operation and Dr. Steven Shin performed the surgery on Wednesday. He became a folk hero in Norman. The memes were endless.
One Sooners fan even went to Cedars-Sinai to hand deliver a gift to Dr. Shin. The State of Oklahoma also gave an official commendation to Dr. Shin after the surgery was performed successfully.
John Mateer referred to Dr. Shin as ‘the GOAT’ in a post on X and fans immediately wanted to know whether he typed out the post with his throwing hand.
This kind of cultural phenomenon can only happen in college football. The European mind could never understand.
Oklahoma student journalists were on the scene.
Mateer was scheduled to arrive home to Norman on Thursday after his surgery on Wednesday. With that knowledge, a pair of student reporters set up outside the airport for the OU Daily— Oklahoma’s independent student news organization.
They hoped to catch a glimpse of Mateer as he got off of the plane but their view was intentionally blocked by local police. It was a valiant effort.
Even though this kind of boots-on-the-ground journalism should be praised, Brent Venables later referred to the two student reporters as “weird” for their behavior. He could not hide his smirk.

I love everything about this. Mateer’s hand was the biggest story in college football over the last five days. To stand outside of the airport to watch him get off of the plane after surgery is dedication. College football is the greatest sport in the world.
