There’s no telling how many couches have been engulfed in flames courtesy of college football fans celebrating a big win, and that tradition can largely be traced back to the University of West Virginia. Officials in Morgantown have cracked down on that practice, and a couple of students are facing a hefty fine after they allegedly harnessed a flamethrower in the wake of the team’s win over Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.
Most college students don’t need an excuse to get drunk and make bad decisions, but watching one of their sports teams walk away with a big victory tends to be a major catalyst for some celebrations that can get very out of hand.
West Virginia is far from the only school that’s had to grapple with borderline (or outright) riots, but students in Morgantown have earned a reputation for going all out after the Mountaineers earn a major win thanks in no small part to their penchant for burning the many, many couches that have been sacrificed to the sports gods over the decades.
That particular tradition seemingly started to gain steam in the 1990s, and law enforcement mounted a crackdown around 15 years ago by threatening firebugs with arson charges that could land them in prison if he blaze was big enough.
Most violators end up being hit with a four-digit fine, which is the case with a couple of students who went a bit too far after the football team’s showdown with Pitt.
A WVU student was fined for starting a couch fire with a flamethrower after the Backyard Brawl
West Virginia hosted Pitt for the 108th installment of the Backyard Brawl last weekend, and Rich Rodriguez got some revenge that was nearly two decades in the making as the Mountaineers rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime en route to earning the 31-24 victory.
He opted to celebrate with a cigar and a late-night meal at Applebee’s, but there were also some couches that hated to see the students who set their sights on them coming in the wake of the victory.
According to WBOY, the Morgantown Fire Department responded to a call on Saturday night before hitting a WVU student and another from Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania with a “malicious burning” citation for a blaze officials say was ignited by a flamethrower.
That charge is accompanied by a fine between $1,000 and $2,000, but the university also noted the offending student could be hit with supplementary discipline due to a clause in the Campus Student Code that prohibits “impermissible burning.”
Never change, WVU. Never change.
