The round of eight of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs took a huge twist late in last Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and now it appears that one spotter is paying for it with his job.
The incident occurred with 31 laps remaining in the opening race of the semifinal round. Playoff contender William Byron sat in second place in the race, but got caught up in a massive accident with Ty Dillon, who had been running in 35th position at the time.
Dillon had stayed out longer than most drivers on a green-flag pit cycle and was finally coming in to the pits. However, Byron was unaware that Dillon was pitting and slammed into the back of his car, ending both their days and taking Byron from a potential race win to a 36th-place finish.

Kauling Racing Fires Spotter Joe White After Controversial Crash At Las Vegas
Immediately after the incident, Byron came over his team radio and asked what had happened. He and his spotter said they did not know Dillon was going to be pitting.
Typically, a driver pitting under green will stick his hand out the window to signal to drivers behind him. Additionally, spotters usually communicate with others up on the spotter stand that their driver will be pitting.
Dillon’s spotter, Joe White, said over his radio that he informed Byron’s spotter that Dillon would be pitting, and that he must not have gotten the memo.
On Wednesday, White tweeted that he showed up to Talladega for this weekend’s NASCAR race only to be informed once he got there that he had been fired.
Got to Talladega. Parked the bus, got fired. In an uber to the airport to go home for the weekend.

White also clarified that “it was already determined that I would not be spotting for Ty next year, but that I would still be with Kaulig in some fashion.”
That is no longer the case, despite the fact that Kaulig Racing CEO Chris Rice wrote the incident off as an unfortunate miscommunication earlier in the week and stated that Dillon and his team didn’t bear the blame.
”At the end of the day, it’s not on the No. 10 car.”

The change in tune led some to believe that either Chevrolet, which supplies engines and cars for both teams, or Rick Hendrick, who owns Byron’s car and could work with Kaulig in the future, had a hand in the move.
Either way, White now finds himself out of a job, adding to an already bizarre scenario in the midst of a heated playoff run.
