Matt Rhule is not leaving the Nebraska football program to coach Penn State. His latest recruiting efforts prove it.

The Cornhuskers leader reaffirmed his commitment to his current employer amid speculation of a departure. He’s looking to bolster his future rosters at the Nittany Lions‘ expense.

James Franklin was fired amid a 3-3 start in Happy Valley following losses to UCLA and Northwestern. Matt Rhule quickly emerged as a top candidate for his replacement.

The ties between the two sides are notable. Rhule is from the northeast and played linebacker at Penn State in the mid-90s. He also has a strong relationship with athletic director Pat Kraft.

He started his coaching career at PSU as a volunteer assistant. Some believe it to be his dream job given the opportunity to lead his alma mater.

He’s denied those insinuations. The head coach has adamantly stated his loyalty to Nebraska with rumors swirling.

Matt Rhule is not going to Penn State.

“I’m not going to talk a lot about job openings when they come,” he said while speaking to the media. “I’m not going to talk about my contract here… I absolutely love it here. I want to continue to take the steps needed to turn this place into a beast.”

Of course, many have their doubts as to his true intentions given some duplicitous dealings from the past. Most notably, his denial of NFL interest at Baylor before accepting a role with the Carolina Panthers.

To further ease the concerns of the fanbase, he’s put his words into action. Rhule reaffirmed his position in Lincoln with a calculated recruiting maneuver.

Nebraska is poaching Nittany Lions.

Matt Rhule is capitalizing on Penn State’s downfall. He’s quickly gone after the program’s top prospects as many rethink their recruitments amid the uncertainty.

That includes the nation’s No. 1 running back, Kemon Spell, who offered early insight into Franklin’s firing.

The offer spree didn’t stop with the five-star ball carrier. Rhule went onto extend scholarship opportunities to defensive lineman Tavian Branch, who is currently committed to Penn State, as well as Jahsiear Rogers, who decommitted after the coaching change.

Linebacker Gabe Jenkins also backed off his pledge to the Nittany Lions this week and will visit Nebraska later this season. Rhule is doing everything in his power to hurt his alma mater.

That would seemingly cement his status as the Cornhuskers’ coach of the future. Of course, conspiracy theorists might say he’s simply familiarizing himself with Penn State players before ultimately jumping ship.

For now, Nebraska fans should view this as a positive in regard to the coaching speculation. He appears locked in.
