Coastal Carolina App State Hype Video Delete Jack Murphy

The college football rivalry between Coastal Carolina and App State has very quickly become one of the most hostile in the country. However, the Chanticleers likely did not mean to post an insensitive hype video in which one of their players taunted deceased Mountaineers offensive lineman Jack Murphy.

It has since been deleted.

Although I do not think the post was intentional, it was a major oversight by the college football video department in Conway. They made a big mistake.

Coastal Carolina and App State are recent college football rivals.

Believe it or not, the Chanticleers and Mountaineers have played only 11 times, dating back to 2005. I say “believe it or not” because these two programs and their respective fanbases hate each other.

It started about five years ago when Jamey Chadwell was still the head coach at Coastal Carolina. His team always played with a chip on its shoulder. His players were not afraid to talk their talk.

That reached a fever pitch during a hard-hitting battle on the teal turf in 2020.

Linebacker Teddy Gallagher slid into App State quarterback Chase Brice’s DMs prior to 2021. The latter mocked the former after he led his team to victory later that year.

And then things got out of hand in 2023.

The Chants won in Boone. Students threw trash — mostly beer cans — at the visiting players before, during and after the game. Some of them were still full of liquid. Offensive lineman Evan Jumper picked up a full beer and chugged it down right in front of the student section.

This is just the Sparknotes version of this heated rivalry. Players on both teams have this game circled before the start of the season. The dialogue on social media is intense.

Coastal Carolina head coach Tim Beck said it best.

There is no love lost. It is hostile.

The Chanticleers deleted a video in poor taste.

As these two teams prepare to go to battle on Saturday, they both released hype videos for the game on Friday evening. Coastal Carolina has since deleted its post and for good reason.

The video featured a clip in which one of its players got in the face of an App State offensive lineman.

That offensive lineman was John ‘Jack’ Murphy. Murphy tragically passed away in August 2024.

I am fairly confident the initial post was a major oversight by the Chanticleers. They likely did not mean to taunt the deceased. I am sure they deleted the post as soon as they realized their mistake.

That was the right thing to do. Rest in peace, Jack Murphy.
