Trent Dilfer won only eight games as the head coach at UAB before he was fired. His former program pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college football during its first game without him.
It proves the initial hire was even worse than we thought.
Athletic director Mark Ingram should not be allowed to pick the next college football coach in Birmingham. He should be fired for ineptitude.
Trent Dilfer was a horrible hire.
UAB players begged the university to hire Bryant Vincent as the full-time head coach in 2022. Ingram decided to go with Dilfer instead— the guy who only had two years of experience coaching a small, private high school in Nashville.
Everybody knew it was going to be a disaster and it was.
The Blazers went 4-8 in 2023, 3-9 in 2024 and started 2025 at 2-4. Fans stopped showing up to games. Their recruiting efforts were an even bigger failure than their record.
Meanwhile, Dilfer often started petty beef with the people around him, reporters and other coaches around the country for no reason. He at one point threatened to tattle to his former coworkers at ESPN and expose other programs by name for tampering but he never followed through on his threat.

His very first moment at UAB was on the sidelines at the Bahamas Bowl when ESPN caught Dilfer showing off his Super Bowl ring to a cheerleader. That was an omen of what was to come— embarrassment.
UAB is better off without him AND without Mark Ingram.
Ingram made the hire. He should not be allowed to make another one.
The Blazers played their first game without Dilfer on Saturday. Alex Mortensen, the son of late ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen, served as the interim head coach. He previously served as the OC.
UAB closed as 21.5-point underdogs against No. 22-ranked Memphis. It was also without starting quarterback Jalen Kitna due to an injury.
Not only did the Blazers cover, they won outright against the College Football Playoff favorite from the group of six.
Backup quarterback Ryder Burton completed 20 of 27 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. The run game averaged 5.3 yards per carry. UAB converted nine of 13 attempts on third down and went 1-for-1 on fourth down. It was a tremendous showing from a team that was completely dead in the water just seven days prior.
Ingram looks like an idiot for hiring Dilfer. His excuse for the decision makes him sound even worse.
"There's no sign over anyone's head that says if you hire me I'll win this many games."

If the Blazers can beat one of the best G6 programs in the country during their first game without Trent Dilfer as head coach, the guy who hired Dilfer as head coach in the first place must be fired. How can you trust him to get it right the second time around when he botched the process so badly the first time?
