The Texas Tech football team was upset by Big 12 rival Arizona State on the road this past weekend, 26-22. Sun Devils fans quickly stormed the field to celebrate the win over a Top 10 foe.

One Red Raiders lineman was involved in an on-field altercation with a fan. That interaction has now gone viral on social media.

It was a game the Sun Devils largely controlled up until the final moments. Arizona State led 9-7 at halftime. It added 10 straight points after the break.

Texas Tech then somehow erased a 19-7 deficit in a matter of minutes before ASU responded by reclaiming its advantage in the final seconds.

The win was incredible for a number of reasons. Obviously, it’s not every day you get to upset the nation’s No. 7 team on your home turf.

Secondly, it kept the Sun Devils firmly in the Big 12 championship mix.

Arizona State is 3-1 in conference play, as is Texas Tech. Both remain a game back from BYU and Cincinnati. The Sun Devils won the league last year to book a College Football Playoff ticket. They hope to do the same again in 2025.

The fans knew the magnitude of the game. They celebrated accordingly.

The Sun Devils (probably) broke the rules.

The fans did not appear to give Texas Tech players enough time to get off the field. The seats began to empty immediately after the final whistle.

The NCAA has cracked down on field storming in recent years. Much of that is due to fan and player safety. Protocols have been put in place to discourage the celebration.

Arizona State did not seem to adhere to those policies in its most recent college football upset. It resulted in an unwanted interaction.

Texas Tech defensive lineman Lee Hunter was seen shoving a fan as he attempted to exit the field. Words appeared to be exchanged but what was said is unclear.

Hunter stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 330 pounds. Luckily, he was escorted away from the fan before the situation escalated.

This is the second time in as many weeks that the Big 12 has seen a negative fan/player interaction in a field storming scenario. Last week, a Colorado football fan confronted an Iowa State receiver and attempted to swipe his helmet.

Again, sides were separated before the situation developed into something greater. Still, it further supported the NCAA’s outlook about fans on the field.

Initially, Colorado was fined $25,000 for its celebration. That decision was reversed after the league determined that the Buffs had followed protocol despite Iowa State players’ presence on the field.

We’ve seen other leagues take action against field storming this year. Virginia was fined $50,000 after a win over Florida State. Mississippi State was hit for $500,000 after beating these very Sun Devils in September.

It will be interesting to see if Arizona State receives punishment for its actions.
