The race for the 2025 Formula 1 drivers championship, which once looked like forgone conclusion, has suddenly become laden with intrigue as the season winds down.

For much of the year, McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have battled one another in a far superior car to see who would claim their first career championship.

However, in recent weeks, Red Bull and four-time defending series champion Max Verstappen have entered the fray, and things are getting pretty spicy.

Verstappen claimed his third victory in the last four races in Sunday’s United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

He now sits in third place in the championship, 40 points behind Piastri and just 26 behind Norris. In the last four race weekends, Verstappen has made up a whopping 64 points on Piastri and 44 on Norris.

Red Bull F1 Team Trying Drastic Measures To Catch McLaren

At that pace, he would overtake both at some point before the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. But the margins are slim. Which means Red Bull is doing everything it can within, and apparently outside of, the rules to close the gap.

According to Motorsport.com, Red Bull was fined €50,000 after a member of its team tried to re-enter the track prior to the start of Sunday’s grand prix in order to remove a vertical strip of duct tape attached to the pitwall. The tape had been placed there by McLaren to aid Lando Norris in positioning his car at the front of his starting grid.

“The marker, at roughly the driver’s head height if the grid spot is adjacent to a wall, is usually placed while Norris is in the car on the grid, and its function is to provide a visual reference when he pulls up in the box after the formation lap – to avoid a repeat of the positioning error he made in this year’s Bahrain GP,” the report states. “The driver has such a restricted view of the track surface from the cockpit that it is difficult to see the markings on the grid itself.”

Norris did lose a spot at the start of Sunday’s race to Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. So maybe the plan worked for Red Bull. However, he did fight back to finish second.

Regardless, the battle for the driver’s championship is well and truly on. And it’s clear that Red Bull are willing to do whatever it takes to win.
