The basketball world got some devastating injury news at the start of July when the halftime show legend known as “Red Panda” broke her wrist while doing her thing at a WNBA game. Thankfully, she managed to recover in time for the start of the NBA season and didn’t miss a beat after hopping back on her unicycle for the first time.

Most NBA teams offer some sort of performance to keep fans entertained at halftime, and there’s one person who’s spent more than 30 years spicing things up during those breaks in the action: Rong Niu, the Chinese acrobat you probably know better as Red Panda.

In 1993, Red Panda was tapped as a last-minute replacement for the halftime act that was supposed to perform at a Clippers game on Thanksgiving, and the crowd got to watch her climb onto her seven-foot-tall unicycle before stacking metal bowls down her legs and expertly flipping them into a stack on her head.

It’s a straightforward but strangely captivating act that landed her a spot on America’s Got Talent and has led to Red Panda performing at thousands of basketball games at the pro and college level.

That includes the showdown between the Lynx and the Fever during the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup final at the start of July, which was cut short after she fell off her unicycle and was taken off the court in a wheelchair to get treatment for what ended up being a fractured left wrist.

Thankfully, she’s managed to make a full recovery and wasted no time getting back in the saddle.

Red Panda looked as good as ever after returning from her wrist injury

That incident wasn’t the first time Red Panda had broken her wrist (she fractured the same joint after falling in 2013), and there’s only so much you can do to ensure everything goes smoothly when you specialize in the art of flicking bowls from your feet and onto your head while balancing atop a unicycle.

She has not performed at a basketball game since injuring her wrist. However, it appears it’s only a matter of time when you consider she was back in action in the wake of the Thursday Night Football showdown between the Vikings and the Chargers, as the crew in the studio got to experience what she has to offer in all its glory.

Richard Sherman seemed particularly impressed by her prowess, and here’s hoping it’s only a matter of time until basketball fans get to witness the magnificence of Red Panda in person.
