Kansas City Royals star Vinnie Pasquantino is working as a media correspondent for Major League Baseball at the World Series. He was MLB’s Player Correspondent for Media Day on Thursday, while Athletics outfielder Lawrence Butler and Rays third baseman Junior Caminero will also be performing those duties during the Fall Classic.
So, when Pasquantino got to interview Shohei Ohtani, he asked him a few pointed, and comical, questions. And they had to do with a couple of pitches the Dodgers star threw to him in the past.
“World Baseball Classic, we faced each other,” Pasquantino said to Ohtani. “And with Kansas City this year, why do you throw so hard to me? Why? Why do you hate me?”
The Royals slugger was referring to the fact that two of the three fastest pitches Shohei Ohtani has ever thrown were to him. The first was a 102.0 mph fastball during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, while the other was a 101.7 mph pitch during a game on June 28th of this season. (The third pitch was another 101.7 mph fastball against Phillies star Kyle Schwarber, also this year.)
Ohtani responded with a laugh. “You’re just a really good hitter. I have to,” he said through his interpreter.
He certainly isn’t wrong about Vinnie Pasquantino. This year, in his fourth MLB season, the Royals’ first baseman smacked 32 home runs and drove in 113 runs.
“That’s not good enough,” Pasquantino replied. “You throw too hard, Shohei.”

Blue Jays manager jokes that he wants his gifts back from Shohei Ohtani
Earlier this week, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider joked that he would like Ohtani to return the items the team gave him during their attempt to sign him as a free agent, including one of the team’s caps and the Blue Jays jacket they gave Shohei’s dog Decoy.

On Thursday, Ohtani was asked about Schneider’s good-natured remarks. With a big grin on his face, he replied that he does still have the cap and that “it’s in my garage.”
