Late last week, a lawyer representing the family of former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy released a video and testimony that countered police’s claim that Lacy was responsible for an accident that took the life of a former U.S. Marine.

Lacy sadly took his own life in April at the age of 24, just days before a grand jury was set to decide whether or not to indict to the one-time future NFL Draft prospect.

On Monday night, following an NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN’s Ryan Clark, himself an LSU product, spoke up on air about the tragic situation, condemning police in the process.

“Kyren Lacy was supposed to be in the NFL. Kyren Lacy was accused of something and being investigated for something that he didn’t do,” Clark said.” And he died having to live with the guilt and the consequences of a guilty man, knowing he was innocent.

“It recently was discovered that he was 72 yards away from the crash that police and state policemen tried to coerce and doctor and use ways to manipulate statements that put this young man behind bars. They changed his joy, they changed his life, and eventually he took his own life.”

Following the claims from Lacy’s lawyer, Louisiana State Police have also made new evidence public, including video from a new angle and testimony from someone on scene who claimed that Lacy’s erratic driving caused a chain of events that ended with the crash.

On Wednesday night, Clark’s ESPN colleague Scott Van Pelt provided an update on the situation and seemingly apologized for Clark’s comments.

“The one certainty here is that this was a senseless tragedy in December, magnified by a second life lost in April,” Van Pelt said. “I apologize for the incomplete reaction that aired on this show Monday night.”

Van Pelt’s comments were not only more measured than those from Clark (for better or worse), but they also likely insulate ESPN from any legal liabilities. So it’s easy to understand why he said what he said. However, he may not have to have an awkward conversation with Clark at some point in the future.
