A high school football coach in California has been placed on administrative leave after an on-field incident during last weekend’s game between Palo Alto and Sacred Heart Prep. He left the sideline during an attempt to tackle an opposing player.
It led to his ejection, which will presumably lead to a multi-game suspension that carries into next year.
Palo Alto finished the 2025 high school football season at 0-10. The Vikings lost every single game by a combined score of 399-167. And yet, it was the coach’s bizarre behavior that will be the lasting image.
Palo Alto suspended Jason Fung.
Jason Fung serves (served?) as an assistant coach for the Palo Alto High School football team. He is also a physical education teacher.
However, his status with the school is currently up in the air. Fung remains suspended by the Palo Alto Unified School District amid an ongoing investigation.
“Palo Alto High School teacher and coach Jason Fung has been placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation,” district spokesperson Lynette White wrote in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is our highest priority. We are taking this matter seriously and are committed to ensuring all athletic events provide a safe, respectful environment for everyone in attendance.”
Commander Dan Larsen of the Atherton Police Department said the family of the two opposing players with whom Fung made contact do not wish to pursue criminal charges at this time. That could change.
“If some of the parents reach out and say they decided to file criminal charges, something like that, then we would do that,” he said. “But without that, yeah, the matter is closed for us.”
In the meantime, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and Central Coast Section are working to determine the appropriate course of action. Should the Central Coast Section rule that Fung was ejected for fighting/assaultive behavior/gross unsportsmanlike conduct on California Interscholastic Federation bylaw 503.M — which seems likely — he will miss six games next season.
If the school allows him to return to the sideline, that is….
The high school football coach left the sideline to protect his son.
Jason Fung is the father of Palo Alto quarterback Justin Fung. His son was sacked for a loss near the Vikings sideline during the second half.
After he was tackled near midfield, a minor scuffle broke out between players on both teams. It was just pushing and shoving. No punches were thrown. No helmets were used as weapons.
And then it got weird.
Jason Fung attempted to swat the ball away from a Sacred Heart Prep defender but could not knock the ball loose. He then grabbed on to the player’s legs and tried to bring him to the ground. The player tried to walk away with the coach hanging on to his leg. They were eventually separated.

A second video of the altercation also shows Fung push a different Sacred Heart player after he got up from the ground. He made contact with two separate opponents after leaving the sideline.
